Restricted Substitute Service
Service of Process can ONLY be made by personally serving the named individual.

This charge does not apply if substitute service is allowed by leaving the initial pleading or subpoena at the named individual's usual place of abode with any person residing there who is eighteen years of age or older OR, in the case of a "Sole Proprietor", serve the person in charge of the business after two unsuccessful attempts have been made to serve the owner at the place of business.
States that require personal service include, but are not limited to:
- Michigan
- New York (Family court only)
All non-attorneys should consult with the clerk of court where the initial filing was made to determine if personal service (i.e. restricted substitute service) is required.
